E3 Trailer and More Revelations
The French Ubi site has posted the E3
Trailer. You can view it at Mysterium.ch
Other Features in Myst4 Revelation will
be:
- Depth of Field- Apparently the DOP will
change depending on where the mouse is pointed,
and it's optional.
- Cursor options- We'll be able to choose
the transparency color and left or right handedness
of the cursor.
- In game hint system- A help system with
3 levels of hints, each more revealing than the
next, this feature is optional and you can choose
whether or not you want to install the hint system.
- Tactile sound hotspots- You will be able
to touch various items and hear a response, like
tapping something metal will create a *ting* sound
etc.
- In game camera and journal- Record your
thoughts and clues in a Journal and throw away your
sketching pad and just take a picture of that tricky
clue you may need later.
Also, Gamespot reveals many spoilers in
their recent article:
Myst IV Revelation E3 2004 Preshow Impressions
The Myst series endures as one of the most beloved
in gaming, with its characteristically rich, immersive,
beautiful worlds, interesting characters, involved
mythos, and challenging puzzles. It's also endured
many changes in its development teams, and this
time, it's Ubisoft Montreal who will be bringing
us Myst IV Revelations. In our first look at the
game, it seems as if Ubisoft Montreal is well
on its way to producing an interesting and worthy
successor to the Myst name.
The story of Myst IV Revelations will harken
back to the very first game, Myst, and your two
major antagonists in that game, the brothers Sirrus
and Achenar. Fans of Myst will recall that at
the end of the original game you imprisoned the
corrupt brothers in the worlds of two separate
books. In this game, Atrus (the father of Sirrus
and Achenar) is petitioned by his wife, Catherine,
to finally free their sons from their punishment.
As they argue, there's an explosion in one of
Atrus' labs and their 10-year-old daughter, Yeesha,
disappears. Atrus appeals to you for assistance
in finding her, and you will embark on a journey
that will take you through four different "ages,"
including the worlds that you stranded Sirrus
and Achenar in, in the first game. Ubisoft Montreal
promises that Myst IV Revelations will at last
reveal what has happened to the brothers.
The game will play much like the other titles
in the series, as a first-person adventure. You
will be able to move through the world and explore
its many areas by simple mouse-clicks. You will
be able to interact with just about anything you
can reach in the game, from turning on a table
lamp, to crouching by a puddle of water and touching
its surface to create ripples, to using your hand
to gently swat away moths from a light source.
You'll pick up a number of different items in
the game, and one such item that we saw was an
amulet that had belonged to Yeesha. Upon picking
up the item, there was a flashback sequence depicting
Yeesha herself fleeing from someone or something.
The developers told us that there will be numerous
flashbacks of this type during the game as you
uncover the mysteries surrounding the girl's disappearance.
There will also be many journals scattered throughout
the different worlds that will provide backstory
and context to the game, and we were told that
puzzle solutions won't depend on information found
in these supplemental materials. Also, the game
will have an available "hint" system for puzzles
that you will be able to consult for up to three
levels of clues to complete certain challenges.
The developers refer to Myst IV Revelations as
"Myst comes to life," and the level of detail
and immersion in the areas of the game that we
saw would support this statement. The environments
were full of the kind of rich detail that's come
to be expected of Myst games, but instead of resembling
static portraits, many had dynamic elements. In
a jungle, bog-type world that we saw, the air
was alive with dragonflies flitting to and fro
and strange creatures preening themselves by the
water. Another world consisted of a barren, rocky
island surrounded by jutting crags that were being
pounded by surf that exploded against the rocks
and into the air. On the sand, crabs clustered
around a dead fish, feeding themselves. (Apparently,
one of the brothers was confined to this island.)
Such environments were also full of sounds, like
the surf and the insects. In addition, when interacting
with objects, there were a myriad of sound effects.
Tapping on a table produced a heavy, wooden sound,
and tapping on a glass lamp produced a light,
ringing sound. While most of the cast of characters
is not yet finalized, Rand Miller (one of the
founders of Cyan, who developed the original Myst)
will be reprising his role as Atrus.
Fans of the Myst series and adventure game fans
will definitely want to keep their eyes on Myst
IV Revelations, which is currently scheduled for
release on the PC in September of this year.

Another "To
D'ni" Delay
Randomos
posted this message today:
|
Wherein we step from behind the curtain...
As you may have noticed, the date implied by
the Top Ten List has sort of grown- during the
QA process we've had to push the release date
back from our original target. We've tried to
have fun with the process- and the changes in
the schedule- and hope you have had fun too.
Today we learned- again, due to the need to make
sure that the quality and level of support were
absolutely ready- that the expected date for the
release of the expansion pack is now Monday March
22nd. We are very confident that this date is
solid, but, with the previous delays, thought
it best to clarify the situation and pass along
what we know. Please note: this date too might
have to be delayed. We really really hope not-
but that's the nature of the beast: you can predict
your testing results, but the actual process may
turn up bugs, and that means fixes and a need
to delay the release.
And yes, we'll continue to try to come up with
humorous additions to our Top Ten list (and if
you have any good suggestions, please drop a private
topic invite to Khatie or myself!).
Thanks all!

Letter
from Cyan
Earlier
today, Cyan put this letter on their website:
|
Uru Live fans and friends,
Thank you so much for your continued support of
the worlds that are Myst and Uru. It has truly been
wonderful immersing ourselves along with you in
the ongoing adventure, following your comments -
good and bad - as you explored Uru Live.
I have some good news and some bad news.
First, the bad news...
Uru Live is being put to bed.
Even with all of the time, money, resources, code,
people, sweat, and heart that were poured into Uru
Live, we needed a certain number of subscribers
to pay the bills. We didn't get there. Uru Live
is innovative and unique; its online universe is
one of the most beautiful and complex ever built,
anywhere. The idea of ongoing content was dramatic
and forward-looking, but it required a substantial
continuing effort to sustain. We were just not able
to sign up the number of subscribers (even for free)
necessary to pay for that effort.
Now for the good news...
The soul of Uru Live will live larger.
The soul of Uru Live came in two parts: the community
and the content. Both will live on. Nothing can
kill the community - it has a life of its own. The
Call and the Gathering of the community will continue.
And the content - what can I say? We have it, large
amounts of it, ready to expand the world of Uru.
In the past weeks we've been hard at work packaging
that content in a different, more inclusive form
- expansion packs - the first of which will be available
in a month or two. Even better, the first expansion
pack, To D'ni, is free. And there's more good news
on inclusivity. I'm pleased to officially announce
that the Mac version of Uru is finally under way.
It would be easy to focus on the negative aspects
of this announcement. But we've grieved our loss,
and with clearer minds we see things in a different
light. The fact is that the continuing Uru adventure
is amazing. The story and places it reaches are
spectacular. And in the long run, we want as many
people as possible to experience and explore these
new worlds. The closing of Uru Live actually gives
us the opportunity to open these expanding worlds
to a larger audience, including those people without
broadband. Only a small portion of the people who
played Uru ever made it to D'ni in Uru Live. Now
everyone can get to D'ni - and beyond.
Again, perhaps the ending has not yet been written.
Shorah,
Rand and the Cyan Worlds Team
