Uru
Live Returns
The
following was posted by Rand Miller regarding Uru Live:
| An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly
considered. An inconvenience is an adventure
wrongly considered.
- G. K. Chesterton
Fellow fans and adventure seekers,
Uru has been quite an adventure for us. After
pouring everything we had into our vision back
in 2002, Uru Live was abruptly cancelled. There
have been several fits and starts since then
- various attempts to keep the vision alive.
The most notable was Until Uru - a continuation
of Uru Live that put its future directly into
the hands of the fans. The fans didn’t let us
down.
Although the fans were able to bide their time
in the ancient underground city and distant
Ages, not much changed. There were huge expanses
to explore and share, but the full vision of
Uru Live was designed to be dynamic and changing
- providing new story and places to explore
all the time. Now, with some help from our forward
thinking friends at Turner/GameTap, we’re pleased
to announce that we’re ready to bring Uru Live
back to life.
We have been furiously toiling behind the scenes
to write some interesting new content that will
make its way into Uru Live in the coming months.
We’ve also been working on the nuts and bolts
- rebuilding our software and servers to clean
up bugs and lag and to provide a base for cutting-edge
improvements in the future.
This new adventure is not without caveats. We’re
smaller and leaner now. We have much more to
do with fewer people to do it. But we’re trying
to work smart to provide new content that provides
fresh new adventure for everyone on a regular
basis.
So here we go again into exciting unknown territory.
Little did we know that the opening lines of
Myst would be so prophetic.
Thanks so much for all of your encouragement
and support,
Rand Miller |
GameTap released this Press Announcement at the Electronic
Entertainment Expo
| “URU LIVE” LIVES ON EXCLUSIVELY AT GAMETAP
Online, multiplayer version of blockbuster
game resurfaces on GameTap, with real-time 3D
and new episodic content
LOS ANGELES – E3 – (May 9, 2006) – “Uru Live”
lives! GameTap, the broadband entertainment
network from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.
(TBS, Inc.), is reviving the online foray of
“Myst”, one of the most popular adventure series
ever created. As part of GameTap’s bold new
initiative, the “Uru Live” game and community
will be available to GameTap subscribers later
this year as part of their monthly subscription.
“Uru Live” is the online multiplayer version
of “Uru: Ages Beyond Myst,” which was developed
by Cyan Worlds. Extensively beta-tested in 2003,
“Uru Live” spawned an avid community of players,
many of whom have kept unofficial sites up and
running ever since. With the advent of broadband
gaming, there is a whole new medium and a ready
audience for this revered title. Unlike its
predecessors, the new worlds of “Uru Live” are
dynamic and alive, making use of real-time 3D
rather than still images to bring players together
online to explore incredible new worlds. To
keep “Uru Live” even more fresh and challenging,
GameTap and Cyan will update the game with new
episodic content on a regular basis.
“The epic journey to D’ni will begin anew this
holiday season on GameTap,” said Stuart Snyder,
GameTap’s General Manager. “We are bringing
back ‘Uru Live’ with new episodes, intriguing
new worlds to explore, and a host of fresh features.
‘Uru Live’ was ahead of its time, and now that
technology has caught up with this visionary
game, GameTap and Cyan are teaming up to bring
it into the bold new world of broadband entertainment.”
“Uru Live” is part of the popular “Myst” series
created by Rand and Robyn Miller. Selling more
than 12 million units, it was the top-selling
video game franchise of the 1990s. In fact,
it is credited with creating a whole new genre
of games, the first-person adventure-puzzle
game.
“Uru Live” will join the more than 500 on-demand
video games and 300 streaming video channels
now available on GameTap.
To register for GameTap, visit www.gametap.com
where you can sign up for the leading all-you-can-play-&-watch
video game lifestyle broadband network for $9.95

Bring
back UruLive petition
in view
of the recent development of cyan starting the d'mala shard
and the fact that it's been made known that there is a potential
backer for financing the return of UruLive, a new online
petition has been started.
you can
read
it here. make sure to click on the 'Sign the Petition'
link to add your name to this updated petition.
the orginal
petition contains over 4100 signatures - some of which are
very recent (2006). so, it's obvious that there's STILL
a big interest - even tho it's been 2 years since Live was
canceled.
let's
make sure we get the word out as much as possible!!! we've
got a real chance to get UruLive back!! post about it where
ever you frequent - there are so many who left the myst-related
forums after Live was canceled...we need to get the word
out about Cyan's d'mala shard on Until Uru AND we need to
get the word out that there's a real potential for UruLive
returning!!

Making Of Myst 5 Documentary
Gameindustry
Press Release.
|
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), a Time-Warner
Company, announced the development of a behind-the-scenes
documentary for Ubisoft's widely anticipated video
game title: Myst® V: End of Ages. The documentary,
which will be packaged with the Myst V: End of Ages
Limited Edition disk as a bonus DVD, will explore
the story behind Ubisoft's best-selling Myst franchise
and focus on the creation of its final adventure.
"Gamers are like the toughest film fanatics: they
want more than a technical look at the making of a
game. They want to see the compelling story behind
its creators, the challenges and triumphs of the creative
process," said Michael Watchulonis, Executive Producer
for GameTap Entertainment. "We at Turner have learned
a lot over the years by producing signature original
programming for CNN and Cartoon Network and are excited
to apply these skills to the gaming industry; specifically
an innovative, breathtaking and cinematic game like
Myst V: End of Ages."
In addition to the Ubisoft project, GameTap Entertainment
is producing an exclusive mix of magazine, reality,
and lifestyle shows, interviews with the who's who
of gaming, celebrity features, and all-new "game trailers"
for the GameTap service. Delivered via streaming video,
the programming will celebrate games in the same way
that Cartoon Network celebrates animation and TNT
celebrates drama.
"We looked at the level of quality the Turner programming
team was bringing to GameTap and realized they would
be a good partner to help us create exclusive bonus
material for our Myst V: End of Ages release," said
Jay Cohen, vice president of publishing for Ubisoft
North America. "We're very excited about the project."
The partnership benefits Myst fans and GameTap subscribers
in several ways. Consumers will receive a valuable
special offer for a GameTap subscription via coupons
within copies of Myst V: End of Ages. The GameTap
service will premiere a shorter, "broadband version"
of the making-of documentary to coincide with the
retail release of Myst V: End of Ages. GameTap Entertainment
will also produce a game trailer and a trailer showcasing
the making-of documentary for the new title, which
will be available to fans before it hits retail shelves.
"We're striving for the day when GameTap is as important
a promotional partner to game publishers as TBS and
TNT today are to movie studios," said Dan Riess, GameTap's
Head of Marketing. "The partnership with Ubisoft on
Myst V: End of Ages, is a first step and we hope to
announce similar partnerships with other publishers
in the near future."
GameTap is a first-of-its-kind broadband entertainment
network that offers games-on-demand plus original
programming via a broadband-connected PC. Both GameTap
and Myst V: End of Ages debut fall 2005.

Myst
5 Details from PC Gamer
PC
Gamer has published an article revealing some of the details
about Myst 5.
|
MYST V: END OF AGES
And if you believe this is the "End," I've got an
island to sell you.
Myst IV: Revelation just came out, right? Well,
one benefit of having two different development
houses tag-teaming Myst sequels is that Myst V will
be released about a year after it's predecessor.
While Ubisoft's last island hop was developed by
its Montreal studio, this time Cyan Worlds returns
to the world it created back in 1994. This follow-up
takes place years after the events of Myst IV. Yeesha,
the precocious daughter of book-maker Atrus and
wife Catherine, has blossomed from an adorable pre-teen
with major dysfunctional-family issues (courtesy
of her psychotic brothers) into a puzzling young
woman carrying the burdens of her family and the
secrets of the lost civilization of D'ni.
Myst V will use proprietary new graphics engine
developed by Cyan, and its interface is designed
to appeal to both classic Myst fans and hardcore
gamers.
"We challenged ourselves to come up with an interface
that could bridge the accessibility of the classic
point-and-click Myst interface with the immersion
of a fully real-time 3D graphic environment," revealsRand
Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds. "We wanted the entire
game to be playable by simply pointing and clicking
a one-button mouse. And, of course, we also included
a full control mode."
One of Myst V's innovations will be Truehand Writing
Technology, marketing-speak for Cyan's in-game writing-recognition
system. Says Miller: "We've added this unique aspect
of control to the game, allowing players to actually
write symbols to communicate with...well...these
creatures. If you know what to write, you might
be able to get them to do things for you."
Will Myst V mark the end of the franchise's story?
Miller's comments suggest it will. "Our goal in
Myst V was to take advantage of the state-of-the-art
in real-time 3D to provide and adventure that wraps
up the Myst story, and at the same time is wonderfully
reminiscent of the original Myst experience."

Myst
Movie Petition
|
Many
fans of the Myst series of games (Myst, Riven, Uru,
etc.) created by Cyan are approving of, or at least
intrigued, by the idea of a Myst movie. Cyan, while
never actually starting production on a Myst movie,
has left the production of such a film as a possibility.
Also, film directors Steven Spielberg and James Cameron
were, at one point, having something of a legal battle
over purchasing the rights to Myst from Cyan. The
Undersigned would like Cyan to consider Spielberg's
and Cameron's offers again, if it hasn't put its foot
down on both offers already. If a film is produced,
someone from Cyan (preferrably Rand Miller) should
oversee the project, so there won't be any Hollywood
butchering. To sum up, we, the undersigned, would
like Cyan to seriously consider the production of
a Myst movie, preferrably directed by either Mr. Cameron
or Mr. Spielberg, and the project overseen by Mr.
Miller.
